Bi-Stability in Flexure Beams: Introducing a Setup for Experimental Characterization

Bi-stable mechanisms can remain in two positions without a power input or locking system. These achieve large displacements with low energy, requiring only during switching. However, their design and analysis are challenging due to the non-linear behavior of flexible members. Researchers commonly use experimental approaches study validate bi-stability, which demands efficient affordable setups. This work presents versatile easy-to-fabricate setup investigate bi-stable flexure beams made styrene plastic. The testing is laser-cut acrylic connectors 3D-printed fixtures. experiments demonstrate that all tested highlight impact thickness on behavior. critical forces obtained range from 0.0277 N 5.2724 between thinnest thickest samples. distance traveled before snapping increments, thickness, ranges 18.78 mm 32.6 mm. samples were subjected cyclic compressive load demonstrated considerable decrement after first load. Thicker flexural present more significant deformation, causing fractures some cases five loads. Regardless same total linear displacement 45 presented consistency rapidness bi-stability characterization, plastic proving be suitable for studying bi-stability.
